YouTube is one of the most difficult platforms for parents to manage. While it contains educational content, it also exposes children to inappropriate videos, disturbing comments, and algorithmic rabbit holes. Jack Hughes provides a step-by-step guide to blocking YouTube on Apple devices.
Why Parents Should Consider Blocking YouTube
YouTube’s algorithm is designed to maximize watch time, not protect children. Even with restricted mode enabled, inappropriate content regularly slips through. For younger children especially, blocking YouTube entirely and using safer alternatives may be the best approach.

How to Block YouTube on iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings and navigate to Screen Time
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and enable them
- Go to Content Restrictions then Web Content
- Select Limit Adult Websites and add youtube.com to the blocked list
- Delete the YouTube app from the device
- Restrict app installations so children cannot reinstall it
Additional Blocking Methods
- Router-level blocking – Block YouTube at the network level for all devices. See Jack’s guide on network-level filtering
- DNS filtering – Use services like CleanBrowsing or OpenDNS to block YouTube network-wide
- Third-party parental control apps – Tools like Bark or Qustodio provide granular YouTube controls
